Patrick Finnegan has extensive experience with complex litigation and white collar criminal defense. In over a decade of practicing law, he has handled a broad range of civil matters, including product liability litigation, insurance actions, malpractice lawsuits, employment disputes, bankruptcy adversary proceedings and commercial cases. He has represented clients in state and federal courts, in arbitrations, and in regulatory matters. Since joining Helmsing Leach in 2003, he has devoted a substantial portion of his practice to representing clients charged with white collar crimes, including offenses relating to the environment, public corruption, and financial and tax matters.

Patrick received his J.D. in 1995 from New York City’s Fordham University School of Law, where he was Articles Editor of the Fordham International Law Journal and student coordinator of the legal writing program. At graduation, he was awarded the Hugh Jones Prize for excellence in criminal and constitutional law, and legal ethics.

Immediately following law school, Patrick served as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Richard W. Vollmer, Jr., in the Southern District of Alabama. He then joined Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP in New York City, where he remained until joining Helmsing Leach. Patrick’s practice in New York focused principally on complex litigation, including securities class actions and civil RICO cases, but encompassed a wide spectrum of other litigation, arbitration and regulatory matters.

Patrick is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, all state and federal courts in Alabama, the state courts of New York, and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Alabama and New York State Bar Associations, the Mobile Bar Association, the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association and the Defense Research Institute.

Patrick was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and spent much of his youth in Ireland. He attended the National University of Ireland at Galway, where he earned a B.S. in 1982, majoring in biochemistry and microbiology, and a post-graduate diploma in computer systems analysis in 1983. After returning to the United States, he attended Queens College in New York City, where he was awarded a B.A. in 1990, with honors in political science.

Patrick lives in the historic Midtown District of Mobile and is very active in his community. Among other things, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Mobile Revolving Fund, a not-for-profit organization which restores historic residences in the area.
